LAPD Ends Kamala Harris Security Detail After Union Backlash

A specialized unit with the Los Angeles Police Department is no longer providing security for former Vice President Kamala Harris, according to multiple reports.

Officers with LAPD’s Metropolitan Division, part of the department’s special operations group, had stepped in to protect Harris after President Donald Trump revoked her Secret Service detail in August, Fox News reported.

That protection ended Saturday after criticism from the Los Angeles Police Protective League, the union representing rank-and-file officers. The group argued city resources should not be used to guard a national political figure.

The union called the arrangement “nuts,” saying in a statement that “LA taxpayers should not be footing the bill for this ridiculousness.”

“We are happy to report that the Metro officers assigned to protect the multimillionaire failed presidential candidate are back on the street fighting crime,” the board of directors said in a statement to Fox News Digital on Monday.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said LAPD involvement was never intended to be long term.

“The plan was always to provide temporary support, and I thank L.A.P.D. for protecting former V.P. Harris and always prioritizing the safety of all Angelenos,” Bass told The New York Times.

Bass’ office did not respond to multiple requests for additional comment from Fox News Digital.

Last week Bass said Trump’s decision to revoke Harris’ protection amounted to an “act of revenge” on a political opponent and put the former vice president “in danger,” according to The New York Times.

The LAPD did not respond to requests for comment from Fox News Digital.

The Los Angeles Times previously reported that the California Highway Patrol was also providing protection for Harris, citing law enforcement sources. Such protection requires approval from California Gov. Gavin Newsom.

“Our office does not comment on security arrangements,” Izzy Gardon, a spokesperson for Newsom, said in a statement to Fox News Digital.

The White House confirmed to Fox News Digital that Trump revoked Harris’ Secret Service protection on Aug. 29. Typically, vice presidents are offered security for only six months after leaving office.

Former President Joe Biden, however, signed an order before leaving office that extended Harris’ coverage for an additional year.

CNN first reported that Trump signed a memo withdrawing the detail. A spokesperson for Harris told Fox News Digital that no reason was provided for the decision.

The Secret Service did not respond to requests for comment.

In July, The Wall Street Journal reported that Harris’ husband, Doug Emhoff, also had his security detail rescinded.

In August, Democratic strategist James Carville had blunt advice Thursday for former Vice President Kamala Harris and her political allies: the Democratic Party wants nothing to do with them in 2028.

Since the 2024 election, Democrats have had a strained relationship with both former President Joe Biden and Harris, who have remained in the public eye despite many in the party wishing they would quietly step aside.

Harris recently announced she would not run for California governor — a decision that has fueled speculation she is keeping her options open for another presidential run in 2028. But on his Politics War Room podcast, Carville dismissed any fears that Democrats would rally behind her again.

“Don’t be terrified,” Carville told one concerned listener. “She wisely chose not to run for governor of California.”

Carville said flatly that Harris will not be the Democratic Party nominee in 2028.

“Anybody that had anything to do with 2024, the party wants to move on from that,” he said. “This isn’t anybody’s fault.”

“This goes to Walz, too. I wouldn’t run again,” Carville said. “If I were your friend, if I were your chief advisor, I’m doing this not from a personal standpoint, but because this is not going to be the environment where Democrats look to anybody connected to the 2024 campaign.”
