Harris, Walz Haven’t Spoken Much As He Gears Up For Potential 2028 Run

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz is set to speak at political conventions in South Carolina and California this weekend, addressing Democratic audiences expected to play a key role in shaping the party’s 2028 presidential nomination.

Walz is embarking on another national tour, further raising his profile within the Democratic Party following his vice presidential run last year. The DFL governor has already held town halls in several states this year and made appearances on prominent podcasts, as well as at the South by Southwest Music Festival in Austin, Texas, the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reported.

This weekend, Walz will deliver back-to-back speeches at Democratic state conventions in Columbia, South Carolina, and Anaheim, California, before returning to Minnesota. He is expected to deliver sharp criticism of President Donald Trump and urge Democrats to more vigorously defend their values.

His trip coincides with the final stretch of Minnesota’s legislative session, as lawmakers work to complete the state budget. When asked Thursday about the timing, Walz told reporters he expects budget negotiations to be wrapped up by Saturday.

“We’ll be done,” Walz said, noting that any additional action would likely wait until early to mid-next week. “A lot of the work that will be done over the next few days is the work of just the professional staff of revising the bills.”

While Walz has not ruled out a 2028 presidential bid, he is widely expected to seek a third term as governor next year, though he has yet to make a formal announcement.

South Carolina and California hold significant influence in the Democratic presidential nominating process. South Carolina led off the 2024 Democratic primary calendar, while California offers the largest delegate count at the party’s national convention, the outlet reported.

Both the California and South Carolina Democratic Parties highlighted Walz’s upcoming visit in announcements released earlier this month.

“A nationally respected, bold and compassionate leader, Gov. Walz resonates deeply with Democrats here in SC. We are thrilled to welcome him to the Palmetto State,” the South Carolina Democratic Party posted on social media.

U.S. Rep. Jim Clyburn of South Carolina extended the invitation for Governor Tim Walz to speak at Saturday’s state convention. Walz is also scheduled to attend Clyburn’s annual fish fry on Friday evening. Maryland Governor Wes Moore, another potential 2028 presidential contender, will address South Carolina Democrats that same night.

Meanwhile, former Vice President Kamala Harris and Walz, her 2024 running mate, haven’t spoken much since they were shellacked by President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance in November, according to a March report.

Walz revealed in an interview with The New Yorker’s David Remnick that he and his former running mate have spoken only “a couple times” since the November election.

When asked why they hadn’t called or texted more often, the 2024 Democratic vice presidential nominee joked to Remnick, “Well, maybe she doesn’t want to talk to me after we got this thing done.” He added that they parted on good terms and noted that his daughter, Hope, misses her deeply.

Weeks after securing the Democratic nomination following then-President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the race, Harris selected Walz as her running mate in August. Seen as a more progressive choice for vice president, Walz frequently joined Harris at campaign rallies.

Since the election, Harris has been mentioned as a possible contender for California governor, while Walz is reportedly being considered as a potential presidential candidate for 2028, Newsweek reported.

Walz described his relationship with Harris as “professional,” noting that the two were on opposite coasts and focused on their respective political responsibilities.

Since the Democrats’ election loss, Walz has continued serving as governor of Minnesota, while Harris returned to California after leaving the White House last month.

“I’m doing my job, and she’s doing her job, and she’s out in California, I believe, living, and I’m here in beautiful Minnesota, where the weather’s always great,” Walz said.
