Zelenskyy Draws Praise From Trump For His Attire After Chaotic First Meeting

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived at the White House on Monday wearing a casual jacket over a collared shirt — a change in appearance that earned unexpected praise from President Donald Trump.

Zelenskyy’s attire had been a matter of diplomatic concern leading into the high-stakes meeting. Just hours earlier, he appeared at the Ukrainian Embassy in Washington wearing a simple t-shirt during a session with Trump’s Special Envoy for Ukraine and Russia, Keith Kellogg, Breitbart News reported.

That decision triggered last-minute talks over Zelenskyy’s dress for his meeting with the American president. According to officials, the White House made it clear it expected more formal attire for the occasion.

The subject was sensitive, given Zelenskyy’s previous appearance in February at the White House, which had been viewed as a diplomatic disaster.

During that earlier visit, Zelenskyy also arrived in casual clothing. Trump, flanked by Vice President JD Vance, openly mocked the look, remarking sarcastically, “He is all dressed up today.” Vance followed up with a stern lecture on gratitude, telling the Ukrainian leader he had not shown enough appreciation for the hundreds of billions in U.S. taxpayer money that had been sent to prop up his war effort against Russia.

That meeting ended abruptly, with Trump and Vance sending Zelenskyy home early — an embarrassing setback for the Ukrainian president.

Mindful of that history, the White House again pressed Ukrainian officials on Monday morning to ensure Zelenskyy would appear in standard Western business attire when meeting Trump in the Oval Office. According to sources familiar with the request, the message underscored “the diplomatic seriousness of the matter.”

Speculation swirled ahead of Zelenskyy’s arrival that he would opt for a “military-style suit” instead of a traditional suit-and-tie. Elvira Gasanova, a Ukrainian designer responsible for many of Zelenskyy’s public looks, confirmed as much.

“Zelenskyy will be in a suit, but the style still remains in a military key with the same symbolism: he is the Head of State, which is at war,” Gasanova told Ukrainian media.

Video later posted to X showed Zelenskyy leaving the embassy in a collared shirt with a casual jacket layered on top — the look widely believed to be the “military-style suit” Gasanova described.

For many in Washington, the outfit still fell short of what is typically expected of a visiting head of state. Observers noted that Zelenskyy would not look at home in a Western boardroom. Yet, for Trump, the compromise appeared to be enough.

Greeting Zelenskyy inside the White House, the Ukrainian leader appeared to say, “It’s the best I have,” while Trump responded with, “I don’t believe it,” and adding, “I love it.”

The remarks stood in sharp contrast to Trump’s biting tone just six months earlier, when Zelenskyy’s appearance had been derided and his diplomacy upended.

The shift was widely seen as a small but symbolic breakthrough in the relationship between the two men. While Trump has pressed Zelenskyy to consider concessions and even territorial exchanges in peace talks with Russia, Monday’s meeting was viewed as an opportunity for the Ukrainian leader to reset his image with the Trump administration.

Even as substantive issues loomed over the talks — including security guarantees, potential European peacekeeping roles, and a tentative commitment from Russian President Vladimir Putin to meet Zelenskyy in the coming weeks — attention to Zelenskyy’s clothing underscored how image and presentation can weigh heavily in global diplomacy, the outlet said.
