New Poll Shows Democrats Dramatically Less Patriotic Than Republicans

If you believe that Democrats do not love the United States the way Republicans do, and if you think the issue is getting worse with the younger generations, new polling shows you are correct.

As Americans come together to celebrate Independence Day this weekend, a new poll suggests that even patriotism is now a dividing line in this country, The New York Post reported.

The survey, conducted by New Jersey-based GOP firm National Research Inc., shows that 91% of self-identified Republicans say they consider themselves patriots. Among Democrats, that number drops to just 50%.

The same split holds when looking at voters in the 2024 election. Ninety percent of Trump supporters said they consider themselves patriots, compared to just 55% of those who backed former Vice President Kamala Harris.

Among conservatives, 87% said they consider themselves patriotic. That number drops to 51% among liberals, according to the results.

Adam Geller, founder of National Research and a Republican pollster who worked on Trump’s 2016 campaign, told The Post the results may partly reflect “a little leftover saltiness” from the last election. But he said the country has a bigger problem.

“We need to have a country where even if you don’t love the president, you’re still proud to be an American—you still hold those values,” he said.

His numbers line up with other polling on national pride.

A recent Gallup poll showed just 36% of Democrats described themselves as “extremely” or “very” proud to be American. That’s down sharply from 62% in 2024—and it’s the lowest number Gallup has ever recorded for Democrats.

Pennsylvania Democratic Sen. John Fetterman weighed in on the news Friday.

“Last week, Gallup polled only 36% of Democrats are ‘extremely or very proud’ to be American. In the greatest country in the world, that’s just wrong. I’m unapologetically grateful for our nation and the American Way of Life—today, and always,” he posted on X.

Among independents, 53% said they are extremely or very proud to be American. That’s a seven-point drop from last year.

Republican pride, on the other hand, rose by seven points to 92%.

Taken together, the Gallup poll found that just 58% of Americans now say they are either extremely (41%) or very (17%) proud to be an American. That’s the lowest overall number Gallup has recorded and a nine-point drop from last year.

To put it in perspective, Gallup found in January 2001 that 87% of Americans were very or extremely proud. That number spiked to 91% after the September 11 attacks.

Gallup also broke it down by generation. Gen Z came in lowest, with just 41% calling themselves very or extremely proud to be American. Millennials followed at 58%, then Gen X at 71%, and Baby Boomers at 75%.

“It is a surprising finding, and sobering,” Geller said. “It’s a little breathtaking.”

“We’ve established the fact that, on average, the left is about 50% [proud of America]. Why? What is it? That’s the part I don’t know yet,” he added. “To me, the next step is understanding what is going on in our country right now.”

“Each generation is less patriotic than the prior generation, and Gen Z is definitely much lower than anybody else,” Jeffrey Jones, a senior editor at Gallup, said. “But even among the older generations, we see that they’re less patriotic than the ones before them, and they’ve become less patriotic over time. That’s primarily driven by Democrats within those generations.”

Geller’s poll surveyed 1,000 registered voters between June 21 and 23. It carries a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.

The Gallup poll surveyed 1,000 adults from June 2 to 19 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.0 percentage points.
