Sheinbaum publica foto con Lula, Petro y Orsi en Barcelona; desata revuelo político

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stirred widespread online reaction after sharing a photo of herself with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Colombian President Gustavo Petro, and Uruguayan President Yamandú Orsi during a democracy summit in Barcelona.

The image, posted during the Fourth Summit in Defense of Democracy, was accompanied by the phrase “Long Live Latin America!” A short message, but one that quickly gained attention across social media and fueled debate over its political meaning.

For many supporters, the post symbolized regional solidarity and a renewed sense of Latin American unity. For others, it was seen as a more pointed gesture, signaling political alignment among several left-leaning governments at a time of rising geopolitical tension.

The Barcelona gathering brought together around a dozen progressive leaders, many of whom called for changes to the United Nations in order to make the organization more democratic, more effective, and better equipped to respond to global crises.

Among the strongest remarks at the summit came from Lula da Silva, who argued that the U.N. cannot remain silent in the face of war or authoritarian threats. His comments were echoed by several participants, reinforcing the summit’s broader call for stronger international action.

At the close of the event, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez urged progressive leaders to move from analysis to action. He also warned about growing dangers to international law and criticized what he described as the increasing normalization of force in global conflicts.

Sheinbaum’s role at the summit also included policy proposals beyond symbolism. She called for a portion of global military spending to be redirected toward reforestation programs and reaffirmed her opposition to military intervention in Cuba.

The now-viral photo has become one of the defining images of her visit, strengthening a message centered on Latin American integration, shared political purpose, and a stronger regional voice on the world stage.
