Trump Escalates Criticism of Fox News Over Jessica Tarlov’s Role on “The Five”

President Donald J. Trump has renewed his criticism of Fox News, targeting the network’s decision to feature liberal commentator Jessica Tarlov as a regular co-host on its popular panel program, “The Five.”

In a forceful Truth Social post, Trump accused Tarlov of repeatedly presenting arguments that conflict with his administration’s record and the views of Fox News’ conservative audience. He also criticized her television style and suggested that her continued presence could damage the network’s relationship with loyal viewers.

“Why does Fox News allow failed TV personality Jessica Tarlov to ‘soil’ The Five?” Trump wrote, before attacking what he described as her negative commentary and misleading interpretation of political events.

The president pointed to several favorable approval polls and emphasized his victory in the 2024 presidential election, including his success in all seven major swing states and his nationwide popular-vote win. According to Trump, Tarlov continues to portray his political standing negatively despite those electoral results.

Trump contrasted his criticism of Tarlov with praise for conservative co-hosts Jesse Watters and Greg Gutfeld, calling them “terrific.” However, he argued that they are sometimes unprepared with the statistics needed to challenge Tarlov’s claims during live discussions.

“MAGA is complaining, BIG LEAGUE, that she’s all over Fox,” Trump wrote, warning that the network could lose viewers by continuing to give her such a prominent role.

Border Security Becomes a Central Point of Dispute

Trump also used the post to highlight border security, one of the defining issues of his political movement. He claimed that illegal border crossings had fallen dramatically under his administration and compared the current situation with the higher number of migrant encounters recorded during former President Joe Biden’s tenure.

The figures cited by Trump should be understood as part of his broader political argument. Immigration statistics can vary depending on whether officials are counting apprehensions, encounters, admissions, parole cases or people who successfully entered without detection.

Nevertheless, Trump’s central message was clear: he believes Fox News should focus more heavily on the results of his immigration policies rather than repeatedly airing criticism from liberal commentators.

A Larger Debate About Fox News’ Identity

The conflict reflects a deeper disagreement over what Fox News should represent.

For decades, the network has attracted an audience seeking an alternative to liberal-leaning television outlets. Programs such as “The Five” became successful by combining conservative commentary, political debate and entertainment.

Tarlov occupies the program’s designated liberal seat, providing arguments that often oppose those of her conservative co-hosts. Fox News may view this ideological contrast as necessary for debate. Many Trump supporters, however, believe the format gives disproportionate attention to Democratic talking points.

That tension raises an important question: Should a conservative-leaning network primarily reflect the views of its core audience, or should it deliberately include opposing perspectives even when viewers strongly dislike them?

Supporters of Tarlov’s role may argue that conservative hosts should be capable of defending their positions against criticism. Removing ideological opposition could make the program less challenging and more predictable.

Trump’s supporters see the issue differently. They argue that viewers already encounter liberal political commentary throughout much of the national media and do not need the same messages repeated on a network they expect to provide a conservative alternative.

Viewer Frustration Fuels Trump’s Argument

Responses from Trump supporters showed that his complaints resonated with at least part of the Fox News audience. Some commenters said they avoid “The Five” when Tarlov appears, while others accused the network of becoming disconnected from the people who helped build its ratings.

One viewer wrote that Tarlov’s presence was the reason they had stopped watching the program. Similar reactions called for Fox News to prioritize what supporters described as fair reporting, factual analysis and stronger representation of conservative voters.

However, social-media responses do not necessarily represent the entire Fox News audience. Highly engaged political users are often more vocal than casual television viewers, and a controversial panelist may generate attention even when that attention is negative.

Fox News Faces a Strategic Choice

Trump’s attack places Fox News in a difficult position. Removing or reducing Tarlov’s role could please some MAGA viewers, but it could also reinforce criticism that the network is unwilling to include meaningful political disagreement.

Keeping her on the program preserves the panel’s ideological contrast, but it risks further angering Trump supporters who believe Fox has become insufficiently supportive of the president and his America First agenda.

The dispute is therefore about more than one television personality. It reflects an ongoing struggle over who defines conservative media in the Trump era: network executives, commentators, ratings data or the political movement that makes up much of the audience.

Trump’s warning to Fox News is unmistakable: respect the priorities of the MAGA movement, or risk losing viewers to newer and more openly pro-Trump alternatives.

For Fox News, the challenge will be maintaining debate without alienating its most committed audience.

The network now has to decide whether controversy strengthens “The Five”—or slowly drives its viewers away.
