Clara Brugada pide a medios bajarle a la nota roja para mejorar percepción de seguridad

Mexico City’s head of government, Clara Brugada Molina, said crime has declined in every borough (alcaldía) of the capital and simultaneously called on news outlets to scale back “nota roja” coverage—crime-focused reporting often centered on shocking or violent incidents—arguing it can shape public perception of safety.

Speaking at a press conference on February 3, Brugada said it would be beneficial to reach a broad agreement with media organizations to lower the intensity of these stories, noting that sensational crime content frequently draws attention. “It would be very good to have a major agreement with all media outlets that we reduce the nota roja,” she said, emphasizing that such coverage can have a direct effect on how residents feel about security.

Brugada also highlighted the influence of news consumption on public sentiment, stating that many people learn about security issues primarily through television. In her view, the way incidents are presented can amplify a sense of insecurity, even when official indicators suggest a downward trend in crime.

Latest Perception and Security Data

The head of government said that the most recent quarterly figures on insecurity perception reflect improved conditions and align with her claim that crime has decreased across all demarcations. However, she acknowledged remaining challenges and said further work is needed to consolidate and sustain the reported security gains.
