Texas Mayor Arrested on Five Felony Charges Involving Elections and Public Records

The mayor of Arcola, Texas, Fred Anthony Burton, has been arrested after a Fort Bend County grand jury indicted him on five felony charges involving alleged illegal voting, misuse of government information and manipulation of official documents.

Burton faces two counts of illegal voting, along with one count each of misuse of official information, fraudulently securing the execution of a document and tampering with a government record.

The allegations have raised serious questions about election integrity, government transparency and the proper use of public authority in the small Fort Bend County community.

Allegations Involving Two Arcola Elections

According to the indictments, Burton allegedly helped people who were not legally eligible to vote cast ballots in two separate municipal elections.

The first alleged incident occurred during the Arcola Municipal Runoff Election in June 2025. The second involved the City of Arcola General Election in April 2026.

Prosecutors claim Burton knowingly assisted three allegedly ineligible individuals in participating in those elections. The indictments represent accusations rather than convictions, and the government will be required to prove each charge in court.

City Contract and Financial-Disclosure Charges

Other allegations relate to Burton’s conduct during an earlier term as mayor.

Investigators accuse him of using confidential or non-public information obtained through his public position to benefit other individuals during a city contract bidding process.

He is also accused of causing members of the Arcola City Council to approve or sign documents affecting the city’s financial interests without providing them with complete information.

One of the projects referenced in the case reportedly involved more than $30,000 but less than $100,000 in public funds.

These accusations go beyond ordinary political disagreements. They concern whether a public official allegedly used privileged information and government procedures in ways that could have compromised fair competition and responsible management of taxpayer money.

Earlier Questions About Burton’s Leadership

The arrest follows previous controversy surrounding Burton’s administration.

In 2024, he reportedly used public funds to hire a private investigator to examine a political opponent. That decision intensified concerns among some residents and political observers about the use of city resources, transparency and accountability within Arcola’s government.

The current indictments are separate from that earlier controversy, but together they have increased scrutiny of Burton’s leadership and the city’s internal controls.

The case was investigated by the Fort Bend County District Attorney’s Public Integrity Division, working with the Texas Rangers.

Public-integrity investigations are especially important because local officials exercise direct authority over municipal budgets, government contracts, public records and local elections.
